Tell us about yourself and your organization!
Franklin Law Group is a boutique law firm located in Northfield, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, with an emphasis in civil litigation and administrative law. We also counsel our clients on a wide variety of issues that arise in the sports and entertainment industries, including intellectual property and internet issues, employment matters, gaming and sweepstakes law, sponsorship, corporate registration and organization, contract negotiation, insurance coverage, and licensure matters.
How did you get your start in the fantasy sports industry?
Fantasy sports have been a passion of mine for many years. I joined my first fantasy baseball league back in the days of “dial-up” internet, and later, in college, I was afforded to opportunity to write for one of the preeminent fantasy sports media companies, RotoWire. Nearly a decade later, I am still a contributor to the site.
It was only natural that my experience with fantasy sports segue into our legal practice. Since joining the Franklin Law Group, which first opened its doors in 2012, I have been lucky enough to work with a number of incredible and innovative businesses in the fantasy sports industry, including contest operators, media and content companies, and service providers.
How many years has your organization been in business?
We’ve been in business for five years.
What made you decide to join FSTA?
To network and connect with others in the fantasy sports community.
What are you looking to get out of your membership with FSTA?
We always appreciate the opportunity to share our legal knowledge and serve as a resource for those in industry in need of assistance. In addition, we work with many types of business in the industry and are always looking to make connections that we can potentially pass on to our clients.
Where do you see the greatest opportunity for growth in the industry?
The continued proposal and adoption of legislation across the country — clarifying the legal status of fantasy sports and imposing practical and necessary consumer protections — should help ensure that fantasy sports remain a fun, safe way for people to enhance their sports-watching experience.
Finally, what’s your favorite fantasy sport?
While I enjoy both fantasy baseball and fantasy football (I am part of some keeper leagues that have been drafting for 15+ years), fantasy basketball has long been my favorite!
Thanks for sharing, Justin! We hope to see you at the FSTA 2017 Summer Conference.
