College Betting Bans Are Counterproductive to a Safe, Well-Regulated Sports Betting Market

In response to concerns around student-athlete well-being, the NCAA has proposed policy measures aimed at reducing harassment of athletes. As part of that effort, the NCAA has urged state regulators to restrict legal proposition betting involving college teams and individual athletes, arguing that these wagers are contributing to increased athlete harassment.
However, the NCAA’s claim that legal college prop betting is a primary driver of harassment is unproven and risks pushing consumer activity into the illegal market. A transparent, legal, and well-regulated sports betting environment is the most effective way to promote athlete safety, protect the integrity of competition, and deter consumers from engaging with unregulated and unscrupulous operators.
